Free AI visibility checkers compared: 7 tools, checked Oct 2026

Updated

Last checked: Oct 23, 2026. Everything below about each tool comes from that tool's own page on Oct 23, 2026 (sources at the end). We didn't run each competitor's check for this page, so we describe what each tool says it does. Free tools change often, so check the linked page before you rely on it.

The short answer

If you want one free check that covers the most AI engines, start with Ahrefs' free AI Visibility Checker: you type a brand name and it reports mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, with no sign-up. If you care mostly about ChatGPT with web search on, RankSurf asks it 10 buyer questions for free. If you want to watch one or two ChatGPT queries every week for free, TrackChatGPT has a free-forever plan for 3 queries.

MentionSweep's free score is for founders who want to know whether AI assistants name them when a buyer asks a "what's the best tool for..." question, and who gets named instead. It asks 10 buyer-style questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok (40 answers) and gives a 0 to 100 score in about 30 seconds. It's the only one of these seven that checks Grok.

How the free checks differ

Where the answers come from. Ahrefs and Semrush report from their own prompt databases: Ahrefs says it uses "search-backed prompts" derived from real searches, and Semrush says its tool draws on 26M+ prompts and responses. RankSurf, TrackChatGPT, Geoptie, HubSpot and MentionSweep ask the AI engines when you run the check. That matters for a new or small brand: a database built from popular searches may simply not include questions about your niche.

Web search on or off. RankSurf says it asks ChatGPT with live web search, so a page you published last week can show up. HubSpot says it asks how each model characterizes your brand "based on its training data". MentionSweep's free score asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok without web search, which shows what the models say from what they already know. The same brand can look very different in the two modes.

Your brand vs your category. HubSpot asks AI about your brand (sentiment, recognition). TrackChatGPT checks one query you pick. RankSurf and MentionSweep write buyer-style category questions ("what's the best... for...") and check whether you're named, which is closer to how a new customer finds you.

What a "score" means. Each tool scores differently: HubSpot gives sentiment up to 40 of its 100 points, Semrush compares you with others in your industry, TrackChatGPT combines mention, position and citation for one query, and MentionSweep combines how often you're mentioned and how high you appear across 40 answers. Scores from different tools aren't comparable.

Privacy of results. RankSurf says your results page has a permanent public URL per domain, and anyone who scans the same domain updates it. MentionSweep shows your free score to you and emails it to you; it isn't posted on a public page.

Which free checker suits you

  • You want the broadest free snapshot: Ahrefs (5 engines plus AI Mode in its FAQ, no sign-up) or Semrush (Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, 3 a day).
  • You're an established brand and care how AI describes you: HubSpot's AI Search Grader, which weights sentiment most.
  • You care about ChatGPT with web search: RankSurf (10 questions) or TrackChatGPT (one query, plus 3 free weekly re-checks).
  • You need Claude checked: Geoptie or MentionSweep.
  • You need Grok checked, or you're a small brand and want to know whether buyer-style questions name you or a competitor: MentionSweep's free score. If you want more depth afterwards, the $29 Full Report asks 50 questions once on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Perplexity and adds a fix list. No subscription.

When you outgrow a free check, the paid trackers compare differently. See our Otterly alternative, Peec AI alternative and Profound alternative pages.

Which free checkers AI assistants name

Every day we ask the same 8 questions through the AI providers' APIs as part of our own tracking. Two of them are about free checkers: "Is there a free AI visibility score checker that shows whether my brand appears in ChatGPT?" and "What tool can I use to check if ChatGPT recommends my brand?". From Oct 19 to 23, 2026, that gave 46 answers across 6 setups: OpenAI gpt-5-mini without and with web search, Gemini without grounding, Perplexity (from Oct 20), Claude (from Oct 21) and Grok (from Oct 22). These are API answers, not the ChatGPT app or a signed-in user's view, and the counts per setup are small. What we saw:

  • Ahrefs was named in 15 of the 46 answers, more than any other tool. Perplexity named Ahrefs' free AI Visibility Checker specifically in 3 answers; the other mentions were mostly Ahrefs in general or its paid Brand Radar.
  • Paid trackers came up often even though the questions asked for free tools: Peec AI in 14, Otterly.AI (the AI search monitoring tool, not Otter.ai) in 11, Semrush in 11 and Profound in 8.
  • HubSpot's AI Search Grader was named in 6 (4 Gemini answers, 1 Perplexity, 1 Claude). Gemini called it a free tool in each of its 4.
  • RankSurf was named once (OpenAI with web search, Oct 19). Geoptie and TrackChatGPT weren't named.
  • None of the 46 answers named MentionSweep. We've been live since Oct 19, 2026, so this page is partly how we hope to change that.

A note on accuracy

AI assistants don't give the same answer twice, and every tool here asks different questions in a different way. Any single check, from any tool, is a snapshot. MentionSweep asks the AI models through their official APIs: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok without web search in the free score, and Perplexity with its own web search in the paid tiers. Results can differ from what a signed-in user sees in the ChatGPT app with search on. Treat any score as a direction, and re-check after you make changes.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is there a free tool to check if ChatGPT mentions my brand?

Yes, several. On Oct 23, 2026, Ahrefs, Semrush, HubSpot, RankSurf, TrackChatGPT, Geoptie and MentionSweep all offered a free check that includes ChatGPT. RankSurf and TrackChatGPT check only ChatGPT; the others also check other AI engines. Ahrefs, Semrush, RankSurf, TrackChatGPT and Geoptie said no sign-up is needed. HubSpot asks you to complete a short form, and MentionSweep asks for an email, to see the full result.

Which free AI visibility checker covers the most AI engines?

By its own page on Oct 23, 2026, Ahrefs' free checker covers the most: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews (its FAQ also lists Google AI Mode). Semrush covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. MentionSweep's free score covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok, and is the only one of the seven that lists Grok.

Do free AI visibility checkers use web search?

It varies. RankSurf says it sends its 10 questions to ChatGPT with live web search. HubSpot says its grader asks each model based on its training data. MentionSweep's free score asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok through their APIs without web search. Ahrefs and Semrush report from their own large prompt databases. Results with and without web search can differ a lot for the same brand.

Why do different free checkers give my brand different scores?

They ask different questions, on different engines, with or without web search, and they score differently. HubSpot weights sentiment most (40 of 100 points), TrackChatGPT scores one query you choose, and MentionSweep scores 40 answers to 10 buyer-style questions. AI answers also change from one run to the next, so any single check is a snapshot.

Do AI assistants recommend these free checkers?

Some of them, in our small set of API checks. From Oct 19 to 23, 2026, we asked two free-checker questions every day and got 46 answers. Ahrefs was named in 15 of them and HubSpot's AI Search Grader in 6. RankSurf was named once, and Geoptie, TrackChatGPT and MentionSweep in none. These are API answers, not the ChatGPT app.

Is ChatGPT recommending your competitor?
